Battle of Leyte Gulf
While attempting to render aid to heavily battle damaged USS Princeton, .Birmingham proceeded alongside stricken ship when explosion on Princeton severely damaged Birmingham. 237 crewmembers killed and another 426 injured on Birmingham.
