U-Boat Attack off Venezuela
On October 4, Caribstar was struck by two torpedoes from U-175 near the mouth of the Orinoco River, Venezuela. The first torpedo exploded in the boiler room which damaged steam lines causing crewmembers to be scalded and burned. The second torpedo probably exploded the ship's magazine. Caribstar sank within three hours
