Collision with USS Ingraham
Chemung departed from New York August 20, 1942 with a convoy bound for the United Kingdom. Two days later Ingraham (DD-444) collided with her at night. The destroyer sank almost immediately when the depth charges on her stern exploded. Chemung , although heavily damaged by the explosion and resulting fires, Chemung reached Boston August 26 for repairs.
