Air Attack in the Java Sea
Marblehead successfully evaded 3 waves of attack. On the 4th wave, seven bombers released bombs at the ship. Two were direct hits and the third a near miss causing severe underwater damage and jamming the rudder causing her to steam in circles. Fire swept the ship and she began to settle by the bow. ... 15 crew members were killed and another 34 were seriously injured. ... Two hours after the Japanese attack ship’s damage control parties had brought fires under control, restored some watertight integrity and reduced the degree on the jammed rudder. Ship was able to steer employing her engines and retired to Tjilatjap for further repairs
