Lost at Sea
Five days after an unsuccessful attack on a target in the vicinity of Bangka Passage, Shark reported a potential target track to Surabaya. The report was acknowledged and she was directed to proceed to Makassar Straight via the north coast of Celebes. Nothing further was heard from the boat and she was subsequently declared lost on 7 March. ... A post-war analysis of Japanese war diaries lists numerous attacks on unidentified submarines in Shark’s area around 11 February 1942. The most likely is the report of IJN destroyer Yamakaze, which reported sinking a surfaced submarine with shellfire at 0137 on February 11. Yamakaze reported hearing voices in the water but did not attempt to rescue survivors.
