Virgil Alexander Wright III was born December 25, 1944 in Nashville, TN. He attended school in Nashville, and graduated from Madison High School in May 1962.

Virgil enlisted in the Navy on August 19, 1963. After completing recruit training at Great Lakes, IL, Virgil volunteered for submarine service and graduated from submarine school in Groton, CT, in July 1964. He later studied at the nuclear power school in Bainbridge, MD and the nuclear power training unit in Saratoga Springs, NY. He served aboard USS Essex before reporting to USS Scorpion in May 1966. He qualified in submarines aboard Scorpion in July 1967.

Virgil is survived by his widow, the former Marleen Poulston of Richmond, VA and his parents, Mr. & Mrs. V. A. Wright, II, of Wartrace, TN. He is also survived by his grandmother, Mrs. W. A. Wright I, and four brothers Ronnie, George, Phillip and Allen and a sister, Alice.
