U-Boat Attack near the Azores
The Liberty Ship Charles C. Pinckney was torpedoed by U-514 while en route to North Africa . The initial engagement began when a torpedo struck a few feet back from the stern. Engines were secured and the order was given to abandon ship. Once the U-boat surfaced, Naval Armed Guard shelled it with four out of five shells landing. The Officer in charge was certain the U-Boat sank. The was abandoned ... The next morning the ship was seen to be still afloat. The Second Mate returned and signaled the other lifeboats to return. When the second U-Boat was seen approaching the ship was abandoned immediately. ... The three lifeboats from the ship were separated after the January 28. One lifeboat was discovered on February 8, the others were never seen again.
