U-Boat Attack near Capetown, South Africa
Coloradan was torpedoed by U-159 on October 9, 1942. The ship sank in four minutes. Survivors were split among two lifeboats which became seperated by the next day. Although one boat was spotted on October 11, the other was not seen until October 19, Fifteen survivors of the Coloradan were onboard the MS Zaandam which was torpedoed on November 2. Six of these were lost, four were rescued bu the SS Gulfstate and five were among the 58 survivors of the Zaandam and the Chickasaw City who landed in Brazil after 8 days at sea.
