On March 19, while returning to Norfolk Dickerson sighted an unidentified ship which fired on the destroyer and badly damaged the charthouse. ... Four of Dickerson's crew were killed, including her commanding officer. The attacking ship was identified as a nervous merchantman, SS Liberator. ... Dickerson was able to proceed under her own power to Norfolk for repairs to the damage incurred by the merchant ship’s gunfire.
