U-Boat attack off Cape of Good Hope
SS Examelia was torpedoed by U-68 south of the Cape of Good Hope while en route to Capetown. The ship sank in seven minutes. Forty men were rescued by SS John Lykes and later departed Capetown South Africa on the ill fated SS Zaandam. Twenty-one Examelia survivors were lost when the Zaandam was torpedoed. Fourteen were rescued by the SS Gulfstate and five others endured 8 days at sea before reaching the coast of Brazil.
