Monaghan

Ship Designation:
DD-354
Date Lost:
Monday, December 18, 1944
Lost in Typhoon Cobra
Preparing to refuel from a fleet oiler and having pumped the seawater ballast out of her fuel tanks in preparation for taking on fuel, the rough sea caused fueling to be canceled. The 100 knot winds and the 60 foot waves rolled the Monaghan on her beam ends and she was able to recover each time. Finally a huge wall of water engulfed the ship and drove the ship under and she was unable to recover. Of the 250 man crew, there were six survivors
