
Excerpts from obituary published in San Diego Union-Tribune on 11/2/2016:
CAPT Paul Boland died at his San Diego home on October 20, 2016. He was born May 7, 1926, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and received his commission as Ensign at Columbia University. He then served aboard USS H.F. Bauer, USS Osprey, USS Peregrine and USS Murray. Upon completion of Navy Postgraduate School study, he was assigned to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations as a communications planner. This was followed by a sea tour as Staff Communications Officer for COMGRUDIV Four. He next attended the Armed Forces Staff College, returned to destroyers and served as Executive Officer of USS Somers and then as Commanding Officer of USS Bridget. He next served with the National Military Command System at Ft. Ritchie, Maryland. Returning again to destroyers, Paul assumed command of USS Robinson. He next attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in Washington, D.C., before assignment as head of the Military Assistance Program on the staff of Commander U.S. Military Assistance Command, Thailand. Again returning to sea duty he commanded USS Fox before his last tour of duty on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations. He retired in 1971 with 27 years of Navy service.
In 1972, Paul commenced employment with the County of San Diego with the Department of Public Welfare. He then transferred to the Tax Collector’s Office and served as Chief of the Administrative Division. He was appointed Chief Deputy Tax Collector in March 1983 and on January 5, 1987, was sworn in as San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector. He was reelected to this position in 1990 and 1994. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, four children, and four grandchildren. Inurnment will be at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego.
