After waiting two years for an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, William Halsey, son of a U.S. Navy Captain, decided to study medicine at the University of Virginia and then to get into the Navy as a doctor. He attended only one year, subsequently attended the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, graduating with the class of 1904. He never held the rank of Lieutenant, Junior Grade, as he was appointed a full Lieutenant after three years of service as an Ensign. Serving during World War II, Admiral "Bull" Halsey was promoted to Fleet Admiral in December 1945, and retired from active duty in March 1947.

O'Brien and the U.S.S. SHAW, engaged in the important, exacting and hazardous duty of patrolling the waters infested with enemy submarines and mines, in escorting and protecting vitally important convoys of troops and supplies through these waters and in offensive and defensive action, vigorously and unremittingly prosecuted against all forms of enemy naval activity during World War I.
