James Mitchell Wells was born August 24, 1940, in Myrtle, MS. While attending school in Mississippi and Texas, James was active with the Future Farmers of America, glee club, and bands. He also sang with the church choir. 

James enlisted in the Navy on August 23, 1958, in Birmingham, AL. Afte3r completing recruit training in San Diego, CA, James attended machinist's mate school in Great Lakes, IL. After volunteering for duty in submarines, he graduated from submarine school in Groton, CT, on September 22, 1960. He completed nuclear power training in May 1961, and reported to USS Nautilus where he qualified in submarines, James reported to USS Scorpion in January 1965.

In addition to his silver dolphins James was authorized to wear the Good Conjuct Medal with bronze star in lieu of the second award and the National Defense Service Medal.

James is survived by his widow, the former Blanche F. Aken of Norfolk, VA; and three sons, James M, William C and Daniel O. He is also survived by his father, James S, Wells of Chicago, IL, and his mother, Mrs. Mary Lou Clifton of Oxford, MS.
