SERVICE MEMORIES

George Elmer Smith was born April 1, 1931, in Paterson, NJ. He graduated from P.S. DuPont High School in Wilmington, DE and enlisted in the Navy on July 7, 1949.

After completing recruit training and electronics technician instruction at Great Lakes, IL, George volunteered for submarine duty. He graduated from submarine school in Groton, CT in August 1956. He attended nuclear power school in Bainbridge, MD, and the nuclear power training unit in Windsor, CT. He studied at the University of Hartford and the University of Southern California.

George served aboard the dock landing ship Fort Mandan and in the submarines Sennett and Mackerel before reporting to USS Scorpion in April 1964.

While in Sennett he qualified in submarines and was awarded his silver dolphins. He also received the Good Conduct Medal with three bronze stars in lieu of the second, third and forth awards, the American Defense Medal, the National Defense Service Medal with bronze star and the Navy Occupation Medal (Europe).

He is survived by his widow, the former Patricia Rothrock of Fort Lauderdale, FL; two sons, Anthony Lynn and George Michael; and two daughters, Nicole Lowe and Jo Anne. He is also survived by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. G.E. Smith, Sr. of Yardley, PA.
