SERVICE MEMORIES

Commander Thomas “Scot” Cregan grew up in Danbury, Conn. and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1987. He served as a shipboard journalist on two Pacific Fleet vessels, USS Jason (AR 8) and USS Acadia (AD 42), followed by three reserve tours with the Naval Construction Force (Seabees). Upon graduation from Western Connecticut State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications & Journalism he was commissioned as a Public Affairs Officer in 1999. He then completed the Direct Commission Officer Indoctrination Course at NAS Pensacola, Fl., followed by the Defense Information School’s Public Affairs Officer Course at Fort Meade, Md.

Cmdr. Cregan’s reserve assignments include the Navy Office of Information East, NY., where he supported operations following the terrorist attacks on 9/11; Navy Chief of Information (CHINFO) office at the Pentagon; the Joint Public Affairs Support Element (JPASE) in Suffolk, Va.; U.S. Central Command (US CENTCOM) in Tampa, Fl.; Officer-in-Charge of the Navy Public Affairs Support Element (NPASE) East in Norfolk, Va; Commanding Officer of the Defense Media Activity (DMA) reserve unit - Ft. Meade, Md.; Reserve Director, Special Staff for U.S. Southern Command (US SOUTHCOM) HQ in Miami, Fl., and is currently assigned as Executive Officer of U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa /U.S. Sixth Fleet’s reserve public affairs unit in Naples, Italy (NR NAVINFO CNE-CNA/C6F).

Cmdr. Cregan’s active duty assignments include a two-year recall as Training Officer at Navy Reserve Center New York City; a one-year mobilization to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan; a year-long Public Diplomacy Officer tour at U.S. CENTCOM’s J5 Strategy, Plans & Policy, Central Gulf Branch in Tampa, Fl.; and a 10-month Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) tour at the Pentagon and NAS Patuxent River, Md. as communication coordinator for the Navy’s Physiological Episodes Action Team (PEAT).

In his civilian career, Cmdr. Cregan has served as a Washington, DC-based defense and Intelligence Community consultant and federal civilian in the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security. He currently serves as the Chief of Communication Integration and Executive Issues for U.S. Air Forces in Europe & Air Forces Africa at Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

Cmdr. Cregan’s decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal and various other service and campaign medals.
