Knowles, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty as a Pilot in a Seaplane stationed at Porto Corsini, Italy. Chief Quartermaster Knowles showed marked courage and exceptional flying ability, and took part in raids over enemy territory under fire.
