Excerpts from obituary published in San Diego Union Tribune on 6/28/2016:
A proud Marine, loving husband and devoted father, Colonel Rufus Calhoun Young IV passed away at home on June 16, 2016. He leaves behind his wife, two daughters and seven grandchildren. COL Young was born in Wyandotte, Michigan, on November 10, 1940. Fittingly, Colonel Young was born on the Marine Corps' birthday and his childhood was spent at various naval stations as his father was a career Navy officer. After his parents settled in Coronado, California, Young graduated from Coronado High School in 1958. He received a B.A. from San Diego State University, a J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law, and a LL.M. from George Washington University.
Young served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1965 to 1987, including assignments as Assistant Chief of Staff, Staff Judge Advocate, U.S. Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, California; Counsel Western Bases (Acting), Office of the General Counsel, Department of the Navy; and Assistant Chief of Staff, Staff Judge Advocate, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego. Outside the military, he was active in the San Diego County Bar Association which honored him for outstanding service and as its Public Lawyer of the Year. After retirement from the Marine Corps he became a Senior Deputy City Attorney for the city of San Jose, California. He returned to Southern California to practice law concluding his professional career in 2014.
Throughout his life, COL Young was an ardent environmentalist, voracious reader and consummate editor. He was proud of his family history, including his Scottish heritage, and toasted Declaration of Independence signer and ancestor Abraham Clark every Fourth of July. COL Young embodied the Marine Corps motto "Semper Fidelis." Funeral services will be at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego. In lieu of flowers donations are suggested to The Semper Fi Fund.
