SERVICE MEMORIES

 Born on July 1, 1927, Henry (Hank) Monaco, Jr of Yonkers, New York graduated High School in June 1945.

In July 1945 Hank enlisted in US Navy where he spent the duration of the war in the Pacific Theater while serving aboard the carrier USS Independence (CV-22).

At the end of the conflict in 1947 Hank was honorably discharged an entered New York University on the GI Bill where in 1951 he completed his undergraduate degree and the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program.

When the Korean Conflict broke out, Hank returned to active duty as an Ensign aboard the battleship USS Iowa (BB-61) during which time the Iowa saw extensive combat operations and was awarded 2 Battle Stars.

In 1953 Hank was discharged and attended Columbia University for his graduate degree.

He then returned to Yonkers and began his career as a teacher and Football Coach leading his team to multiple city titles. Coach Monaco was later assigned to the Board of Education as Director of Physical Education and later Director of Personnel, the position he held until he retired in 1991.  

Henry J. Monaco, Jr., Navy veteran, teacher, football coach and Yonkers Board of Education administrator died on June 13, 2018, a few weeks short of his 91st birthday in Saratoga Springs NY.

Hank is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Maureen Wright Monaco, his six children, and brother Johnny Monaco. 

Henry Monaco was a true gentleman who served his country, his city, family and friends with steadfastness, modesty, courage and kindness.
