Historical records of the Naval Historical Center, Washington Navy Yard, report that on August 27, 1803, while serving aboard the frigate USS Constitution, Seaman Richard Beedland fell from the mizzen top aloft, striking his head and chest, and was killed.  He was buried at sea.
