Submarine Attack off Guadalcanal
While operating in company with Task Force 16 northeast of Guadalcanal the US Force engaged a strong Japanese force in the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands. During the ensuing action, Porter was torpedoed by a submarine and critically damaged. 15 crewmembers died in the mishap. When it was determined that the damage of Porter was beyond repair the crew abandoned ship, and the hulk was sunk by gunfire from USS Shaw.
