Torpedo Attack en route to Oran
Rowan was operating in support of the Paestum landings in the Gulf of Salerno when action occurred. While returning to Oran on 10 Sept, German E-boats attacked the force. Rowan counter attacked which caused the E-boats to break off their attack on the main force. Five minutes after regaining her station as an escort for the Main force Rowan was struck by a torpedo and sank in less than a minute. 202 of the 273 officers and men went down with the ship.
