U-Boat Attack near Delaware River
The Tanker W.L. Steed was attacked by U-103 about 90 miles from the mouth of the Deleware River. The torpedo strike set the cargo afire and caused the bow to to settle. The U-Boat later surfaced to finish the job by shelling the tanker. ..The four lifeboats from W.L. Steed were subjected terrible storm and cold. ... Only four from the crew of 38 survived the harsh cold and heavy seas.
