Excerpts from obituary published in San Diego Union-Tribune on 6/8/2014:
Captain William Biggar, USN, died February 16, 2014, at the age of 85. CAPT Biggar was a long time resident of San Diego. He died at home under the care of hospice and with his three children at his side. Bill was born August 24, 1928, in Brooklyn, New York. He was raised in Amesbury, Massachusetts, until the age of 17 at which time he enlisted in the Navy. After receiving an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Bill graduated as an officer in 1954. His naval career of 23 years began with diesel submarines and his many accomplishments include being among the commissioning crew of the USS BONEFISH and having command of the USS RAZORBACK. Bill's Navy career also included serving twice on the USS CHICAGO and working in the Pentagon. Upon retirement in 1978, Bill and his wife settled into a comfortable life together in San Diego cultivating their home and feeding the birds. CAPT Biggar is a World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veteran. He received the Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam. Bill is survived by his three children and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Ann, on June 18, 2010. Bill and Ann will be interred together at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego where Bill is to receive military honors.
