He entered the Navy on June 14, 1948 and reported to Great Lakes, IL for recruit training. He graduated from submarine school, Groton, CT in December 1948 and reported to USS Corporal for his first duty in submarines. He later served on the commissioning crews of the submarines USS Wahoo and USS Sargo before reporting to USS Scorpion in September 1959 on the commissioning crew. Walter qualified in submarines on Feburary 10, 1950 on the USS Corporal.

In addition to the silver dolphins of a submariner he wore the Good Conduct Medal with three bronze stars in lieu of the second through fourth awards; Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon; United Nations Service Medal; Korean Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.

Walter Bishop was selected as Chief of the Boat of USS Scorpion in July 1962, while he was still a petty officer first class (Chief Select).
