Excerpts from obituary published in San Diego Union-Tribune on 5/8/2013:

Helen Louise Brooks was born on September 20, 1918, in Lowell, Massachusetts.  Following attendance at Barlett Junior High and Lowell High School she attended Boston University and then Columbia University receiving her training as a nurse.  She joined the Navy Nurse Corps in August 1944 and served almost 30-years in supervisory and instructor positions during World War II, Korea and Vietnam.  During her service she was credited with rewriting the Navy nursing manual “Operating at Sea.”  Upon her retirement she established her home in San Diego, California.  She died in San Diego on April 26, 2013, and was buried with full military honors at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego.
