U-Boat Attack near South Africa
Chickasaw City was struck by two torpedoes from U-172. The ship sank within three minutes. Survivors were picked-up by HMS Rockrose and brought to Capetown. Forty-one survivors from Chickasaw City left Capetown aboard MS Zaandam which was torpedoed November 2 1942. Fifteen members of the Chickasaw City crew were lost in this sinking. Twenty-three were rescued by SS Gulfstate and three were among the 58 survivors of the Zaandam that made a landfall in a lifeboat at Barreirinhas, Brazil on November 11.
