Chocowinity is a small town located in Beaufort County on the east coast of North Carolina. Beaufort County has a strong and proud military veteran community and is rich with American history. It was for this reason we opened the Chocowinity Middle School chapter of the United States Navy’s Story Corps Program. It functioned as an extracurricular club allowed students to learn about key moments of American History by those who have served our nation. Students shared memories of family members who have served our nation as far back as World War II and even got to hear about everything the military can offer them from actual veterans. One of our school’s faculty shared his experience serving in the United States Marine Corps. He shared many stories from his experience at Basic Training at Parris Island, South Carolina and showed his graduation book containing images and descriptions of the challenges and accomplishments he and his brothers in arms completed to earn the title, “United States Marine.” This experience and many more thanks to the Navy Memorial have brought the past to life for our students and has assisted our efforts to preserve American History as a member of the Navy Memorial Student Interview Program.
