CIVIL  WAR  UNION  SAILOR

Historical records report that Joseph R. Clayton was born in England during 1835.  After emigrating to the U.S. he joined the Union Navy and served during the Civil War as a Seaman aboard the gunboat USS General Thomas which primarily operated on the waterways of the Confederate South.  Clayton died on June 13, 1900, survived by his wife and three children.  He is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Union City, Pennsylvania.
