Lost on Patrol near Truk
Covina departed on her first patrol on November 4, 1943. She was to proceed to an area south of Truk, patrolling as close to the island as possible to intercept Japanese surface units which might threaten amphibious operations in the Gilbert Islands. Despite repeated attempts to communicate with her, she was not heard from again after fueling at Johnston Island on November 6. ... Post-war analysis of Japanese records indicated that IJN submarine I-176 fired three torpedoes at a submarine south of Truk on 16 November, two of which hit the target. In all probability, this was Corvina, the only US submarine known to be sunk by a Japanese submarine during the war.
