Excerpts from obituary published in San Diego Union-Tribune on 6/2/2016:

Major General Carl William Hoffman, USMC (Ret), passed away on May 31, 2016.  He was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on December 24, 1919, and made his way through Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, as a dance band leader.  He joined the Marine Corps at the start of World War II and earned the Silver Star and two Purple Heart Medals while participating in operations on Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, and Tinian.  He also served combat tours in Korea and Vietnam.  After serving as Commanding General at Twenty Nine Palms, Parris Island, and Camp Pendleton, he retired from the Marine Corps in 1978.

MAJGEN Hoffman was the consummate musical arranger and composer, and performed dance music with a dance band in San Diego for many years.  He was married to Allie Hoffman for 60 years before her passing in 2005.  Together they formed choral groups who performed show and dance tunes with Marine wives during their tours around the country.  General Hoffman is survived by his three children, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  He will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
