The Liberty Ship Jeremiah Van Rensselaer was torpedoed by U-456 while en convoy to the United Kingdom. Damaged by three torpedo strikes, the ship was abandoned without orders. It was determined that the ship may have been saved had she not been abandoned prematurely. ... The ship was sunk with gunfire from escort ships.
