U-Boat Attack en route to New York
The Liberty Ship Jonathan Sturges was torpedoed by U-707 in the North Atlantic while in return convoy to New York from Liverpool, England. After straggling away from the convoy, the ship was struck by two torpedoes and began flooding at once. Orders to abandon ship were given immediately after the attack. All survivors ended up on two lifeboats. ... Survivors from the first boat were finally picked up ao March 12. Of the seventeen survivors on the second boat, only five remained alive after forty-one days at sea.
