Mined off Normandy
LST-523 was assigned to the European theater and participated in the invasion of Normandy in June 1944, While operating off the Normandy beachhead, LST 523 struck an enemy mine. Forty-two of her men perished in the incident. LST 523 was damaged so severely by the mine explosion that she sank almost immediately after being hit.
