John “Jack” McCullough enlisted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 28 Feb 1944, one month before his 18th birthday. He received basic training at the Naval Training Station (USNTS), Great Lakes, Illinois from 29 Feb to 10 Apr 1944. He was then transferred to the Naval Receiving Barracks (USNRB) in Shoemaker, California on 25 Apr 1944 for further assignment. Camp Shoemaker was also known as Fleet City. It was home to the Naval Training and Personnel Distribution Center for the West Coast.
On 26 May 1944 he reported to Naval Air Transport Service (NATS) Squadron VR-4 located at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oakland, California. The Naval Air Transport Service was a branch of the United States Navy from 1941 to 1948. At its height during World War II, NATS totaled four wings of 18 squadrons that operated 540 aircraft with 26,000 personnel assigned. Squadron VR-4 was commissioned in March 1943 as a maintenance squadron. In May 1945 he was selected for aircraft maintenance training at the NATS Naval Training School, Oakland.
On 29 Nov 1945 he reported to NATS Squadron VR-12 which was also a maintenance squadron commissioned in 1944 at the Naval Air Station Honolulu, Hawaii. On 18 May 1946 was transferred from VR-12 to Bainbridge, Maryland for release from active duty. He was discharged on 07 Jun 1946.
