Excerpts from obituary published in San Diego Union-Tribune on 1/4/2017:
James W. Mullen was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on August 17, 1941. He graduated from high school in 1959 and then pursued an undergraduate degree in Zoology at the University of Michigan where he graduated in 1963. He completed medical school at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, his surgery externship at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1967, and surgery internship at University of Minnesota Hospitals from 1967-1968 which solidified his dedication to emergency medicine. Moving to California in 1972, Jim began his two years of active naval service. A year aboard the USS Coral Sea in Vietnam as the ship surgeon was followed by a year as a staff surgeon at the Naval Medical Center Oak Knoll in Oakland, California. After his military service, Jim started his own private medical practice and served in Half Moon Bay, California; San Diego, California; and Nashville, Tennessee. Jim died on December 27, 2016, survived by his wife, four children and eight grandchildren. He will be buried at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego.
