XO Scott J. Fisher on LCDR (Ret.) George M. Bailey

It was an absolute honor to have George as my personal Guest of Honor at my incoming Change of Command on March 19th of this year.  I have known George since I was a teenager in the 1980s.  He and my father, Roland Fisher, were inseparable.  My father was the CEO of a defense contracting company and I worked for his company for 8 years (1980-1988).  I grew up with George in my life.  My father was very fond of him and they worked and played hard together.  George has been a mentor of mine for 35 years.

I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be a naval officer and had a dream of flying fighters.  I would listen intently to George’s stories of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.  He is a very real reason that I have served for 26 years in the Navy.  Throughout my teenage years and well into college, George gave me salient advice about life in general, and specifically about the Navy.  We have kept in contact throughout all these years.  My favorite time spent is, even still, listening to stories about him and my father.  I recall many good times in San Diego, Pax River, and Washington D.C. with George and my dad.  However, my absolute favorite times are when George and I get together, have a good glass of scotch and a fine cigar, and talk about life.  We honored George at my Change of Command.  I singled him out to the crowd when discussing our veterans and war heroes.  He was the only one in the crowd who served in our military during three different conflicts.  He is a personal hero of mine.
