Excerpts from obituary published in San Diego Union-Tribune on July 31, 2012:

Betty Anderson passed away peacefully on July 21, 2012, at her home surrounded by her family.  She was born on April 27, 1942, in Laurel, Mississippi, and graduated from George S. Gardiner High School where she was an avid athlete and musician.  She graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a Bachelor of Science degree.  She went on to teach in Florida for five years before receiving her commission as a United States Naval Ensign in 1967.  Captain Anderson proudly joined the United States Navy during the Vietnam War and retired in 1994 after serving her country for 28 years.  CAPT Anderson furthered her education while in the Navy by attending the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, receiving a Master of Science degree in Management.  She also attended the Armed Forces Staff College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, both in Washington, DC.  Her career included many distinguished assignments including Commanding Officer, US Navy Personnel Support Activity, United Kingdom/Northern Europe in London as well as Commanding Officer of Service School Command at the Naval Training Center, San Diego.  CAPT Anderson led a very distinguished career with medals and decorations including the Legion of Merit with Gold Star, the Meritorious Service Medal with two Gold Stars, Navy Commendation Medal with Gold star, Navy Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Medal with Bronze Star, Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Ribbon, Navy Recruiting Ribbon and The Expert Pistol Medal.  Captain Anderson often said, Either your life stands for something or it stands for nothing. Clearly, her life stood for honor, courage, commitment, and dignity.  Memorial services are scheduled for the The North Chapel at the former Naval Training Center, San Diego.  Burial will follow at Arlington National Cemetery.
