U-Boat Attack near Greenland
While en route to Wales, SS Susana was torpedoed by U-221 325 miles south of Cape Farewell, Greenland. The ship's stern began sinking almost immediately after the torpedo struck. Seas were so rough it was almost impossible to launch lifeboats, one lifeboat got away. Although the British Rescue Ship SS Gothland arrived on scene in about an hour the rough sea ands swells prevented Gothland from lowering a lifeboat. The Captain maneuvered his ship carefully among the survivors allowing his crew to haul them aboard in a valiant effort.
