Ison went to boot camp at Marine Corps Base San Diego (now called Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego). He served with Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division during the Battle of Okinawa in World War II. He was photographed on May 10, 1945 racing across "Death Valley" in Okinawa during the battle, which became an iconic photograph of World War II.
