U-Boat Attack off New Jersey Coast
The Tanker R.P. Resor was torpedoed by U-578 while en route from Texas to Massachusetts . After being struck by one torpedo the ship burst into flames from bridge to after end. ... One survivor of the sinking had been on the forecastle head when the torpedo struck. He and the only other survivor were picked up by a Coast Guard vessel.
