Submarine Attack Enroute to Philippines
Providing escort for the carriers Midway and Fanshaw Bay while proceeding from New Guinea to the Philippines, a Japanese submarine lurking in a US submarine safety zone fired a long range torpedo spread at the US Force. One of two torpedoes struck Shelton blasting her starboard screw which killed 13 men and seriously injured 22 others. Valiant efforts were made to save Shelton however efforts to stem the flooding proved unavailing and as her list increased, the crew transferred to Rowell. Shelton continued to remain afloat and an attempt was made to tow her to safety. Lang took her under tow and proceeded out of the area. While under tow to the nearest port, it became apparent that Shelton was too badly damaged to be salvaged as her list increased the ship capsized. Her hull however remained afloat and ultimately US forces had to dispose of the hulk with gunfire.
