U-Boat Attack in the North Atlantic
Having sighted the surfaced U-610 off the starboard beam, SS Steel Navigator was swung to bring the U-Boat astern. The U-Boat submerged. The gun crew had a chance to fire two rounds. That afternoon, a torpedo struck the ship on the starboard side. The boilers exploded and the ship sank in about 3 minutes. Initally faced with a calm sea, the weather worsened and lifeboats became seperated. Only the men on the #2 lifeboat were ever seen again. They were rescued eight days later.
