John Driscoll Sweeney, Jr. was born April 27, 1945, in Oakland, CA, the son of Rear Admiral and Mrs. John D. Sweeney, Sr. USN (Ret.). He attended St. Mary's School in Annapolis, MD and LaSalle Military Academy on Long Island, NY before graduating from Annapolis High school in 1964. In high school he was very active in dramatics. He enjoyed racing automaobiles as a youth.

After enlisting in the Naval Reserve in Baltimore, MD, John chose submarine duty and attended submarine school in Groton, CT in 1964. John came on active duty May 17, 1967. He was later stationed in Key West, FL, before being assigned to USS Scorpion on 18 June 1967. He was authorized to wear the National Defense Service Medal. 

He is survived by his parents, RDML & Mrs. John D. Sweeney, USN(Ret) of Annapolis, MD.
