Battery Fire at Iwo Jima
While taking station off Iwo Jima in preparation for a fire support mission, an enemy shore battery opened fire on Terry scoring a direct hit on the opening salvo with damage to the forward engine room. The blast knocked out the starboard engine and damaged her steering controls. ... Eleven members of the crew were killed and another 19 were wounded by shell bursts. ... Emergency repairs to the battle damage were accomplished along the southern coast of Iwo Jima and after two days, sufficient repairs had been accomplished to allow Terry to proceed to Saipan.
