During World War II, LST-342 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater and participated in the New Georgia-Rendova-Vangunu occupation in July 1943. She was sunk by a Japanese torpedo off the Solomon Islands on 18 July 1943 and struck from the Navy list on 28 July 1943.
LST-342 was sunk by the Japanese submarine RO-106 as it was sailing unescorted for Rendova carrying a cargo of aviation fuel and ammunition. The stern half, including the officers and crew quarters quickly sank and was not seen again. The front half of the ship remained afloat and was eventually towed to an island where it served as a storage facility. It can still be seen there.
