Excerpts from obituary published in San Diego Union-Tribune on 2/17/2016:

John “Jack” Edward White of San Marcos, California, passed away on February 12, 2016.  He was 85.  A native New Yorker, John enlisted in the Navy in 1948 and served as a radio man.  He spent much of his career at sea based out of Norfolk, Quonset Point, Mayport and San Diego.  His service also included overseas postings in Japan, Guam, Hong Kong and service in the Korean War and the Cuban Missile Crisis.  After years of service aboard ship he spent his last few active years teaching at the “A” School at Naval Training Center, San Diego.  He retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1969 after 21 years of honorable service.  John began his second career in the banking industry with Bank of America and later with Union Bank, and earned a degree in Business Administration from San Diego City College.  Always a strong believer in community service and wanting to give back to the city he loved so much, he spent the last fifteen years working as a volunteer for the San Diego Police Department as a Retired Volunteer Service Patrol, earning several commendations for his service.  He spent long hours along with many other volunteers helping maintain the security of evacuated neighborhoods during the October 2007 wildfires.  Interment will be at a later date when he will be laid beside his wife, who predeceased him in 2012, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego.
