BEGAN TRADITION OF FAMILY NAVY SERVICE
John Ziemer was born May 26, 1890, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He joined the Navy in October 1910 and served until October 1914 when discharged with the rate of Boatswains Mate Second Class. During World War II he was employed as a civilian aircraft inspector at Naval Air Station, Lakehurst, New Jersey.
He married on May 5, 1911, and fathered seven children, including five boys. Ziemer’s enthusiasm for sea service and for aviation was so great that all five of his sons followed him by joining the Navy during World War II. Two of his sons became Naval Aviators, another became a Naval Air Crewman Chief Petty Officer, the fourth served in the Seabees, and the fifth achieved the rate of Radarman First Class serving aboard two carriers. John Ziemer died July 12, 1972, and is buried at Riverside Cemetery in Toms River, New Jersey.
